Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science (SOARS)
The SOARS Program
is designed to further science education and provide access to careers
in the atmospheric and related sciences for students of minority groups
that are historically under-represented in the science community. Each
student is teamed with a science mentor, a writing mentor and a community
mentor. In FY03, ACD staff mentored the following students:
Roberto
Cancel III – Science Mentor: Mary Barth;
Writing Mentor: Daniel Marsh
Rebecca
Kit Ying Chan – Science Mentors: Andrew Gettelman
and William Randel
Damian
Mattis – Science Mentor: Steven Massie; Community
Mentor: James Smith
Okason
Morrison – Science Mentor: Lee Mauldin; Writing
Mentor: Jean-Francois Lamarque
Erik
Ulysses Noble – Writing Mentor: Louisa Emmons
Nichole
Spence – Science Mentor: Sasha Madronich; Writing
Mentor: Sue Schauffler; Community Mentor: Jadwiga Beres
Melanie
Zauscher – Writing Mentor: Barry Lefer
ACD Fellowship Program
The purpose of the
ACD Fellowship Program is to foster enhanced collaborations between
ACD scientists and their academic counterparts. In FY03, ACD hosted
the following fellowship appointments:
Adele
Chuck, University of East Anglia, visited the
Stratospheric/Tropospheric Measurements Project, from 3 March
2003 to 30 August 2003. During this time, she worked on gaining
expertise in the technical side of instrument analysis and participated
in experiments related to the production of the tertiary alkyl
nitrates.
Alam
Hasson, Department of Chemistry, California State University
at Fresno, visited the Laboratory Kinetics Project from 2 June 2003
through 15 August 2003. He investigated the branching ratios of reaction
R1 for four organic peroxy radicals.
Evelyn
Jäkel, Institute of Tropospheric Research, Germany,
visited the Atmospheric Radiation Investigations and Measurements Project
from 21 July 2003 to 15 October 2003. She worked on studies comparing
the actinic flux density for several spectroradiometers with regard
to the UV-sensitivity, stray light rejection, mechanical stability
and time resolution.
Guohui
Li, Texas A&M University, is visiting the Global
Modeling Project from 22 August 2003 to 22 December 2003. During his
visit, he used existing models to study the effect of city pollution
on regional chemistry.
Marcy
Litvak, Department of Integrated Biology, University
of Texas at Austin, visited the Global Modeling Project from 1-30 November
2002. She worked on biosphere-atmosphere exchange of carbon dioxide,
water, VOC’s and reactive nitrogen in dominant ecosystems.
Teresa
Nunes, Universidad de Aveiro, Portugal, visited the
Biosphere-Atmosphere Interactions Project from 21 March 2003 to 9 May
2003 and from 22 September 2003 through 22 October 2003. During her
visit, she worked on VOC emissions by Mediterranean forest species.
Paul
Seakins, University of Leeds, United Kingdom, visited
the Laboratory Kinetics Project from 8 July 2003 to 12 September 2003.
He participated in flash photolysis/diode laser studies of Cl + RH
and alkoxy radical reactions.
Alison
Steiner, Georgia Institute of Technology, visited the
Biosphere-Atmosphere Interactions Project from 4 August 2003 through
29 August 2003. She worked on leaf level experiments and their role
in modeling studies.
Internship
Program, Louis Pasteur Institute, France
ACD participates in a program with the Louis Pasteur Institute in France
for students who have completed a degree in instrument design. The program
is designed to increase the students’ experience, technical skills
and language skills and to give them an opportunity to function independently.
The students work half-time at NCAR for an eight-month period with one
of the science groups in the division. Last year, ACD hosted the following
students:
Jean-Sebastian
Hutt – Mentor: Eric Apel
Frederic
Moser – Mentor: Elliot Atlas
Miscellaneous Informal Educational Activities
Eric
Apel sponsored the research of two Broomfield
High School students on “The Hayman Fire VOC Experiment”.
The students won an award for this research.
Mary
Barth was a mentor for a high school project for a
student from Cherry Creek High School.
Jadwiga
Beres served as a judge for the Boulder County Science
Fair.
Jadwiga
Beres was a mentor for the “Destination Imagination” project
at Washington Bilingual School in Boulder.
Kathleen
Barney, Jadwiga
Beres, Teresa
Campos, Elisabeth
Holland, Denise
Montzka and Teresa
Rivas were mentors for high school students at the
3rd Annual Building Bridges in Education Conference sponsored by the
Boulder County Latina Women’s League in partnership with the
UCAR Education and Outreach Program.
Samuel
Hall, Barry
Lefer and Richard
Shetter gave informal presentations and answered questions
for hundred of visitors to the Rocky Mountain National Park during
the Summer, 2003 period. The group was performing solar path calibrations
at that site, and their instrumentation attracted park visitors who
engaged in discussions with the scientists. In September, the group
participated in an all day open house at the park and provided information
to the general public on a broad range of atmospheric issues.
Christine
Wiedinmyer served at a judge at the Weber Elementary
School Science Fair in Arvada.
Christine
Wiedinmyer was a mentor/advisor during the Spring,
2003 semester for the Air Pollution Control Class in the Department
of Engineering, University of Colorado.
